Research
Scientist Associate IV or V (depending on qualifications)
The
Department of Geological Sciences in the Jackson School of Geosciences
at the
University of Texas at Austin seeks a scientist to oversee and run its
Electron
Microbeam Facilities. This lab serves a diverse community of
researchers in the
areas of igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentary petrology,
structural
petrology, geomicrobiology, paleontology, hydrology, and reservoir
characterization. This scientist will maintain the facilities at full
functionality, develop and improve analytical routines, train new and
continuing users of the facilities, and participate in a graduate-level
course
in electron microbeam analytical techniques. The laboratory consists of
a JEOL
8200 electron microprobe (both JEOL software and Probe for
Windows® are
installed), a Philips/FEI XL 30 ESEM (including CL and EBSD), a JEOL
JSM6490LV
SEM, and a Brüker D8 Advance X-Ray diffractometer. The minimum
requirement is a
Master of Science degree in geological sciences, material sciences, or
a
related field, and experience in operating electron microbeam
instrumentation
and in quantitative electron microprobe analysis. The preferred
candidate will
hold a Ph.D. in one of the above fields and have experience in ESEM
operation,
EBSD analysis, in training users in the operation of such facilities,
and have
working knowledge of both JEOL and Probe for Windows software. This
position is
permanent and fully funded, with salary level competitive and
commensurate with
qualifications. The option to pursue independent funding and to engage
in
independent research is open and negotiable.
